Stanardsville Awarded $1 Million Downtown Revitalization Grant

The Town of Stanardsville was awarded a $1 million Downtown Revitalization grant on September 2, 2016 by the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).   The funds will be used for façade improvements on several commercial buildings on Main Street; housing rehab projects on Ford Avenue; blight removal; and construction of a Performance Pavilion / Town Market structure near the County Administration building on the west side of town.

Stanardsville submitted a grant request in March totaling $996,790 under the highly competitive Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.  Only 10 other localities in Virginia were awarded CDBG funds this year, and most of those were counties.

*STAR* was instrumental in development of the grant proposal and, working with the town, will manage implementation of the various grant projects going forward.

A Management Team of key stakeholders, including Mayor Gary Lowe, Supervisor Bill Martin, County Administrator John Barkley, Economic Development Director Alan Yost, *STAR* President Don Pamenter, as well as business owners, property owners, students, and town residents, met seven times earlier this year to develop proposals for revitalizing the downtown area.  Several meetings and public hearings were also held to consider input from members of the community.  Presentations on the proposed project activities were made before the County Board of Supervisors and the Stanardsville Town Council, both of whom agreed to Resolutions in support of the grant proposal.

The grant proposal also included a detailed  Economic Restructuring Plan for Stanardsville.  Here is the article about the grant award in the September 8, 2016 issue of the Greene County Record Town awarded $1 million dollar grant
